Online Obituaries Robert H. Carr Sr, 86, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away July 19, 2010 as the result of a vehicle accident. He was born November 29, 1923 in Westerly, RI, the son of Hampton and Jessie Carr.
Bob was an active young person who achieved Eagle Scout status as a Boy Scout. He was a member of the Westerly Ambulance Volunteer Corp, a member of the Westerly Grange and the Franklin Masonic Lodge. He served in WWII as part of the 112th Anti Aircraft Artillery battalion during the invasion of Sicily, and received an honorable discharge. He married Margaret Pickering in 1947, relocated to Wallingford CT, raising a family and becoming deeply involved in community affairs. He joined the Junior Chamber of Commerce, rising to JC State Senator and finally National JC Senator while supporting the efforts of the Miss America pageants. During his tenure with the pageant process he progressed from production manager to producer at the local and state levels, to recognition at the national pageant level. He was an avid sailor and planned a retirement focused around boating. Upon retirement and the sudden death of Margaret, Bob moved to Punta Gorda to enjoy the area and its offerings. Bob married again, to Ruth Zeck, and became deeply involved with the First Baptist Church of Punta Gorda. He was on the Building committee for the new facilities, the Pastor search committees, helped develop and support the audio-visual capabilities within the church and eventually became a Deacon. He was active in the church’s Horn of Plenty efforts to support the needy and was always involved with the needs of the church members. Bob was also deeply involved with the Owners Association for the River Oaks community where he lived. He was an employee of the Seminole Lakes Country Club for the past 10 years, which aided him in developing his skills as a golfer. Upon Ruth’s passing in 2005, he focused more on his golf and efforts within the church. He will sorely missed by all that knew him at both the golf course and the First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his children, Robert, H. Carr Jr of Port Charlotte, FL, John W Carr of Wallingford, CT; Roxanne Schipritt of Meriden, CT and Evelyn Christy of Westerly, RI; grand children, Robert H Carr III of Liberty Hill, TX, Sharlene Kieslich of Wallingford CT, Shannon St Hilaire of Wallingford, CT, Warren Perkins III of Wallingford, CT, Morgan Hanley of Cape Cod, Mass, Norman Christy III of Westerly, RI; great grand children, Robert H Carr IV stationed at Ft Hood, TX, Britney Carr of Rainbow City, AL, Karl Kieslick Jr of Wallingford, CT, Kaytlyn Kieslich of Wallingford, CT and Joseph T St Hilaire of Meriden, CT; sister, Lonita Barker of Wallingford, CT and Companion Ester Hirons of Port Charlotte, FL.
