Herbert J. Schmieder, 84, of Punta Gorda, FL passed away December 1, 2012. He was born October 31, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY to Joseph and Myrtle Schmieder. He served in the US Army. Herb spent his career in law enforcement, retiring in 1988 as a Police Captain after 30 years of service to the New York City Police Dept. He and his wife moved to this area in 1990 from Queens, NY. Locally, he was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church and a social member of the Kingsway Country Club. He was a former member of both the Charlotte Harbor Yacht Club and the Punta Gorda Boat Club and had enjoyed bowling twice a week with the Shore Birds and the Italian-American Club.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ida Schmieder of Punta Gorda, FL; son, Michael (Karline) Schmieder and their son Graham Michael; daughter, Suzanne Schmieder and her daughter, Sydney Rose, all of New York City, NY
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Wednesday December 5, 2012 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 211 W Charlotte Avenue, Punta Gorda. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations in memory of Herb be made to the church.
