Douglas Edward "Pete" Phillips, 81, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away
Monday, June 21, 2010 while at the Douglas T. Jacobson State Veterans Nursing
Home. He was born July 6, 1928 in South Carolina, the son of Douglas and Julia
Phillips. Pete joined the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II in August 1945 at the age of 17 and was honorably discharged in August 1948. He served on Johnston Island in the South Pacific and earned the following medals during his service: Legion of Merit, Coast Guard Commendation, USCG Good Conduct, Cold War Victory, USCG Service, American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific Campaign, WWII Victory, USCG Meritorious Unit Commendation, and the Sea Service Deployment.
After leaving the service, Pete continued his career in textiles. He met the
woman of his dreams, Elveen Jowers, and they were married in 1953. He was a good husband to his wife, Elveen and a good father to his daughters, Sonya and Shari. Pete worked with several textile manufacturers, moving up and down the east coast. He retired as a Manufacturing Manager from Carborundum in Lockport, N.Y. He eventually settled in Port Charlotte, and lived there over 20 years. Pete enjoyed bowling and golfing, having won many trophies in both sports. He always enjoyed the beach and fishing, which made Florida such a special place for him with year-round nice weather. Pete had a loving, gentle personality and was a strong Christian. He was on fire for the Lord and he showed it. His faith in Christ led him to witness often and bring numerous people to the Lord. He served as an usher for years at the New Day Christian Church, shaking many hands, making all feel welcome. He is survived by his wife, Elveen; his two daughters, Sonya (John) Anderson and Shari (Randall) Harvey; four grandsons, Eric and Jason Anderson, Bryan and Aaron Harvey; and his two sisters, Sara Jones and Betty Waldrop. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Charles Phillips; and his sisters, Margaret Bryson and Doris Jean Phillips.
