Albin J. "Al" Benson, 71, of Port Charlotte, FL passed away November 3, 2011. He was born June 2,1940 in Marquette, Michigan to Albin E. and Freda (nee Beaudry) Benson. Al served four years in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era and was stationed in North Africa for two years. He was sent to Vietnam as an advisor for a short time. He served as a Police Officer for 22 years, retiring from the City of Flint, Michigan. His badge No. was 54 which prompted a lot of teasing about "Car 54, where are you?" During this time Al attended the University of Michigan-Flint and received his Bachelor of Science degree from Northern Michigan University.
Al played golf for many years before he became ill and loved to go fishing, partying and having lots of fun and laughs. He made many friends over the years. He was a life member of the American Legion Post 110 and served as an officer for several years. He was a life member of D.A.V. and belonged to the Eagles Lodge 3296, the Moose Lodge 2121 and the Elks Lodge 2763.
He will be greatly missed by his loving wife of 22 years, Priscilla "Pris" Benson; children, Jackie (Erik) Mall of Atlas, MI; Joe (Cindi) Benson of Marquette, MI; Jill (Fred) of Litchfield, MI; Jerry (K.C.) Benson of St. Johns, MI; seven grandchildren and 1 great grandchild as well as his sister Diane (Dick) Fraser of Rapid City, SD.
The family will receive friends from 11:00 am till 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 8, 2011, followed by the funeral service at 1:00 pm Tuesday at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 2405 Harbor Blvd., Port Charlotte, FL.
