Charles "Charlie" Diez, Jr., 87, of Englewood, Florida, passed away November 5, 2017 at his home in Englewood.
Charlie was born in Tampa, Florida on August 3, 1930, graduating from Hillsborough High School in 1948. Upon graduation from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama in 1952, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army, and shortly thereafter married Mary Ellen Felis of Mobile. In 1953, Charlie was deployed to South Korea, returning home in 1954. Through the 1950s, Charlie and Mary Ellen owned dairy farms in Hillsborough and Pasco counties, and the Golden Triangle Dragstrip in Oldsmar, until his enrollment in the Stetson University School of Law, from which he graduated in 1961. From 1961 until 1964, Charlie was employed as an estate tax agent with the Internal Revenue Service in Birmingham, Alabama. In 1964, Charlie and Mary Ellen moved to Englewood, where he became an associate with the law firm of Wood, Scheb, Whitesell, and Drymon. In 1967, Charlie became a partner with the firm of Robertson, Robertson, Walker & Diez. In 1968, he was appointed as the municipal judge for the City of North Port, Florida, where he served while still maintaining his private law practice. In 1971, he opened his own practice, which eventually became Diez and Floyd, P.A. in 1998, where he practiced until his retirement in 2015.
Charlie was active in the community, having been a charter member of the Englewood Elks and Rotary, and president of the South County Bar Association. He took great delight in providing pro bono legal services to countless individuals, as well as to numerous charitable and non-profit local organizations over the 51 years he practiced law in Englewood. He was an avid fisherman, woodworker, gardener, and pilot, and was an excellent golfer. Above all, he found his greatest enjoyment in spending time with his family and his beloved pets.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Phillip. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen, his sons Nick (Susan) of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina and Michael (Donna) of Englewood, and his daughters Patricia (David) Reaves of Venice and Mary Ann (Chuck) Floyd of Englewood. He is also survived by five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, a brother, Richard (Cecille) of Kissimmee, a sister, Rosemary Green of Lutz, and five nieces.
Visitation will be held at the Lemon Bay Funeral Home in Englewood on Saturday November 11, 2017, from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. A mass will be held at St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Englewood on Tuesday November 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., with burial to follow at Gulf Pines Memorial Park.
